If you have purchased a mobile phone in Pakistan or brought one from abroad, it is important to check whether the device is registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
Pakistan uses the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) to identify and regulate mobile devices operating on local networks. Users can check their phone’s IMEI status through the PTA’s device verification system, including by using SMS short code 8484. ProPakistani
This guide explains how to find your IMEI, check your PTA registration status, understand the result and what to do if your phone is not compliant.
What Is PTA Mobile Registration?
PTA mobile registration refers to the registration and verification of a mobile device’s IMEI through the DIRBS system.
The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique identification number associated with a mobile device.
When you purchase an imported or previously unregistered phone, checking its IMEI status can help you determine whether the device is compliant for use on Pakistani mobile networks.
DIRBS is designed to identify devices and prevent non-compliant or blocked devices from continuing to operate on local networks.
How to Find Your Mobile IMEI Number
Before checking your PTA status, you need your phone’s IMEI number.
Method 1: Dial *#06#
Open your phone’s dialer and enter:
*#06#
Your phone should display its IMEI number.
If your phone supports dual SIMs, you may see two IMEI numbers.
In that case, check both numbers rather than checking only one.
Method 2: Check Phone Settings
On most Android phones, you can find the IMEI under:
Settings → About Phone → IMEI
The exact menu name can vary depending on the manufacturer.
On an iPhone, you can generally find the IMEI under:
Settings → General → About
You may also find the IMEI printed on the original packaging or device documentation.
Method 1: Check PTA Status Through SMS
One of the easiest ways to check a mobile device is through SMS.
Step 1
Find your phone’s 15-digit IMEI.
Step 2
Open the SMS application.
Step 3
Type the IMEI number as the message.
Step 4
Send the IMEI to:
8484
PTA has identified SMS to 8484 as one of the methods users can use to check their device status. ProPakistani
Step 5
Wait for the response.
You should receive information indicating the status of the submitted IMEI.
Method 2: Check Your Phone Online Through DIRBS
You can also use the PTA DIRBS platform for device-related services.
PTA DIRBS:
Open PTA DIRBS
When using an online service, make sure you are accessing the genuine PTA/DIRBS website rather than a third-party website asking for your CNIC, OTP or other sensitive information.
PTA has previously warned the public about fraudulent messages and links pretending to be associated with DIRBS. ProPakistani
Method 3: Use the PTA Device Verification App
PTA also provides a Device Verification System (DVS) for checking mobile device information.
PTA has advised consumers to use its official device verification channels, including the Device Verification App available through official app stores. ProPakistani
When downloading an application, make sure that it is the genuine PTA application and not an unofficial app with a similar name.
What Does the PTA Status Mean?
After checking your IMEI, you may receive a status indicating whether the device is compliant, non-compliant or blocked.
Compliant
A compliant device has a registration status that allows it to operate under the applicable DIRBS requirements.
If you are buying a used phone, this is one of the important checks you should perform before completing the purchase.
Non-Compliant
A non-compliant device does not meet the applicable registration requirements.
If you have purchased an imported phone with this status, you may need to complete the relevant registration process and pay applicable duties or taxes where required.
Blocked
A blocked device cannot normally be used on Pakistani mobile networks.
If a phone shows a blocked or problematic IMEI status, investigate the reason before purchasing or attempting to use the device.
How to Check PTA Status Before Buying a Used Phone
Checking the PTA status before paying for a used phone can help you avoid unexpected problems.
Follow these steps:
- Ask the seller for the phone’s IMEI.
- Dial
*#06#on the actual device. - Compare the displayed IMEI with the phone’s packaging where available.
- Check the IMEI through PTA’s verification system.
- If the phone has two SIM slots, check both IMEIs.
- Make sure the device’s physical IMEI information is consistent.
- Only complete the purchase after you are satisfied with the device’s registration status.
Don’t rely only on a seller’s statement that a phone is “PTA approved.”
Check the device yourself before paying.
Why Dual-SIM Phones Need Extra Attention
Many modern smartphones support two SIM cards and therefore have two IMEI numbers.
For example:
- IMEI 1
- IMEI 2
When buying a dual-SIM phone, check both IMEIs.
A buyer should not assume that checking one IMEI automatically confirms the status of every IMEI associated with the device.
What If Your Phone Is Not PTA Registered?
If your phone is not compliant, the next step depends on your circumstances.
For an imported device, the relevant registration process may require identity and device information, and applicable duties or taxes may need to be paid.
PTA’s DIRBS system is used for device registration-related processes, while applicable duties and taxes are part of the government revenue process.
Before making any payment, use the official DIRBS process to determine what is required for your particular device.
Be Careful With Fake PTA Messages
Mobile users should be particularly careful with messages claiming that:
- Your phone will immediately be blocked
- Your SIM is involved in suspicious activity
- You must click a link to verify your PTA registration
- You must provide your CNIC or OTP
- You need to pay money through an unknown website
PTA has warned users about fraudulent messages and links that falsely claim to be associated with DIRBS. The authority advises consumers to use official DIRBS channels, SMS 8484, or the official Device Verification App for checking device status. ProPakistani
Never enter your CNIC, password, OTP or banking information on an unknown website.
PTA Registration vs SIM Registration
These two things are different.
SIM Registration
A SIM is associated with a person’s identity/CNIC through the cellular operator’s registration process.
Mobile Device Registration
A mobile device is identified using its IMEI and is checked through the DIRBS system.
So, having a SIM registered against your CNIC does not automatically mean that every mobile phone you use is PTA compliant.
