Introduction
A professional CV is one of the most important documents in a job search. It gives an employer a quick overview of your education, experience, skills, and suitability for a position.
Whether you are a fresh graduate looking for your first job or an experienced professional planning your next career move, your CV should clearly present the information that is most relevant to the position.
A good CV does not need complicated graphics or excessive information. It should be clear, accurate, easy to read, and tailored to the job.
In this guide, we explain how to make a professional CV for jobs in Pakistan in 2026, what information to include, what mistakes to avoid, and how fresh graduates can create a strong CV even without extensive work experience.
What Is a CV?
CV stands for Curriculum Vitae. It is a document that summarizes your professional and academic background.
A typical CV can include:
- Contact information
- Professional summary
- Education
- Work experience
- Skills
- Certifications
- Projects
- Achievements
- Languages
- Professional profiles or portfolio links
The exact sections can vary depending on your experience and the job you are applying for.
What Makes a Professional CV?
A professional CV should be:
Clear
Recruiters should be able to quickly find your education, experience, and relevant skills.
Relevant
The information should relate to the position you are applying for.
Accurate
Never include false qualifications, employment history, or skills.
Easy to Read
Use consistent headings, spacing, fonts, and formatting.
Concise
Avoid unnecessary information that does not help demonstrate your suitability for the job.
How to Make a Professional CV Step by Step
1. Add Your Contact Information
Start your CV with your basic professional contact details.
Include:
- Full name
- Phone number
- Professional email address
- City and country
- LinkedIn profile, if relevant
- Portfolio or professional website, if relevant
Example
Muhammad Ahmed
Lahore, Pakistan
Phone: +92 XXX XXXXXXX
Email: muhammad.ahmed@email.com
LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/muhammad-ahmed
Use an email address that looks professional.
Avoid addresses that contain inappropriate words, jokes, or unnecessary numbers.
2. Write a Professional Summary
A professional summary is a short introduction at the beginning of your CV.
It should explain:
- Who you are
- Your main area of expertise
- Your experience or education
- What type of opportunity you are seeking
Example for a Fresh Graduate
Recent Bachelor of Business Administration graduate with strong communication, Microsoft Office, research, and organizational skills. Seeking an entry-level position where I can apply my academic knowledge, develop professional experience, and contribute to a growing organization.
Example for an Experienced Candidate
Marketing professional with five years of experience in digital marketing, content strategy, social media management, and campaign coordination. Experienced in developing online marketing campaigns and analyzing performance data.
Keep your summary short and relevant.
3. Add Your Education
List your most recent or highest qualification first.
Include:
- Degree or qualification
- Institution
- City, if useful
- Graduation year
- Relevant distinction or achievement, if applicable
Example
Bachelor of Computer Science
University of Punjab, Lahore
2022–2026
Intermediate in Computer Science
Government College
2020–2022
If you have several years of professional experience, your education section can usually be shorter.
4. Add Your Work Experience
For experienced candidates, work experience is one of the most important parts of the CV.
For each position, include:
Job Title
Company Name | Location
Month Year – Month Year
Then add several bullet points describing your responsibilities and achievements.
Example
Sales Executive
ABC Trading Company | Lahore
January 2024 – Present
- Managed customer inquiries and sales orders.
- Maintained customer records and follow-up schedules.
- Assisted the sales team in achieving monthly targets.
- Prepared basic sales reports using Microsoft Excel.
Whenever possible, show measurable results.
Instead of:
Responsible for increasing sales.
Consider:
Helped increase monthly sales by improving customer follow-up and repeat-order communication.
Only include figures that are accurate and can be supported if asked during an interview.
5. Create a Relevant Skills Section
Your skills should match the position.
For example, an accountant might list:
- Microsoft Excel
- Bookkeeping
- Financial Reporting
- Accounting Software
- Data Entry
A digital marketer might list:
- SEO
- Content Marketing
- Social Media Management
- Google Analytics
- Email Marketing
A software developer might list:
- Python
- JavaScript
- SQL
- Git
- Web Development
Do not create a very long list of skills just to make the CV look impressive.
Prioritize the skills that are genuinely relevant to the vacancy.
6. Add Certifications
Professional certifications can strengthen your CV, particularly when they are relevant to the position.
Examples include:
- Microsoft certifications
- Google certifications
- Digital marketing certifications
- Accounting certifications
- IT certifications
- Professional training courses
Include:
Certification Name
Issuing Organization | Year
Do not list certificates that you have not actually completed.
7. Add Projects
Projects are particularly useful for students and fresh graduates.
For example, a computer science graduate could mention:
Final Year Project – Online Inventory Management System
- Developed a web-based inventory management system.
- Created product and user management features.
- Used database technology for storing records.
- Tested the application before deployment.
Projects help employers understand how you have applied your knowledge in practice.
8. Include Internships
Internships count as valuable experience, especially for students and fresh graduates.
Include:
- Organization
- Position
- Duration
- Responsibilities
- Skills developed
Example
Marketing Intern
XYZ Solutions | Lahore
June 2025 – August 2025
- Assisted with social media content planning.
- Conducted basic competitor research.
- Helped prepare weekly marketing reports.
9. Add Languages
If language skills are relevant to the job, include them in a simple section.
Example
Languages
- Urdu – Native
- English – Professional working proficiency
- Punjabi – Native
Only describe your proficiency accurately.
10. Should You Add a Photo to Your CV?
A professional photograph is not universally required for every job application.
Before adding a photo, check the employer’s instructions.
If a photo is requested, use a professional headshot with:
- Good lighting
- Simple background
- Professional clothing
- Clear facial visibility
Avoid casual selfies or heavily edited photographs.
Best CV Format for Jobs in Pakistan
For most applicants, a reverse-chronological CV is a practical choice.
This format places your most recent education or employment first.
A simple structure can be:
Name & Contact Information
↓
Professional Summary
↓
Work Experience
↓
Education
↓
Skills
↓
Certifications
↓
Projects
↓
Languages
You do not necessarily need to include every section. Select the sections that add value to your application.
How Long Should a CV Be?
For many candidates, one or two pages is enough.
Fresh Graduate
A one-page CV is often sufficient if you have limited experience.
Experienced Professional
Two pages may be appropriate when you have several relevant positions, projects, certifications, or achievements.
Do not add unnecessary information just to make the CV longer.
How to Make a CV for a Fresh Graduate
Fresh graduates often think they cannot create a strong CV because they have no professional experience.
That is not necessarily true.
You can highlight:
- Education
- Final-year projects
- Internships
- Certifications
- University activities
- Relevant skills
- Freelance work
- Volunteer work
- Academic achievements
Example Structure
Name & Contact
Career Objective / Summary
Education
Projects
Internships
Skills
Certifications
Languages
This structure can help demonstrate your potential even when your employment history is limited.
How to Customize Your CV for Each Job
One of the most useful improvements you can make is to customize your CV for the position.
Suppose a company is hiring a Customer Support Executive and its vacancy emphasizes:
- Communication
- Customer handling
- MS Office
- Problem solving
Your CV should make those relevant skills easy to find.
If you are applying for a completely different position, such as an accountant, your CV should instead emphasize:
- Accounting
- Excel
- Bookkeeping
- Financial reporting
The goal is not to change your qualifications. It is to present your genuinely relevant qualifications more prominently.
Use Keywords From the Job Description
Many companies use digital recruitment systems to organize applications.
For this reason, it can help to use accurate terminology from the job description when it genuinely matches your experience.
For example, if the vacancy requires:
Microsoft Excel
and you genuinely have that skill, write:
Microsoft Excel
rather than only writing:
Computer Skills
This makes your CV clearer to both automated systems and human recruiters.
Common CV Mistakes to Avoid
1. Spelling and Grammar Errors
A CV with frequent spelling mistakes can appear careless.
Review it carefully before submitting.
2. Using the Same CV for Every Job
A generic CV may fail to highlight the experience most relevant to a particular position.
Customize it where appropriate.
3. Adding False Information
Never exaggerate:
- Qualifications
- Job titles
- Experience
- Salary history
- Technical skills
Employers may verify the information during recruitment.
4. Too Much Personal Information
Avoid adding unnecessary personal details.
For example, information such as:
- Father’s occupation
- Mother’s occupation
- Religion
- CNIC number
should not automatically be included unless a particular application specifically requires it.
Only provide sensitive personal information through legitimate application channels when it is actually required.
5. Unprofessional Email Address
Use a simple professional email address based on your name whenever possible.
6. Excessive Design
A CV should look professional, not like a promotional poster.
Avoid:
- Too many colors
- Excessive graphics
- Huge icons
- Decorative fonts
- Unnecessary charts
A clean design is usually easier to read.
PDF or Word: Which Format Should You Use?
If the employer does not specify a format, PDF is generally a practical choice because it helps preserve your formatting across different devices.
However, always follow the employer’s instructions.
If an employer specifically requests a Word document, submit a Word document rather than ignoring the requirement.
What File Name Should You Use?
Avoid names such as:
CV.pdf
or
New CV Final Final.pdf
Use a professional filename instead.
Recommended format
Muhammad-Ahmed-CV.pdf
or
Muhammad-Ahmed-Software-Developer-CV.pdf
This makes your application easier to identify.
How to Submit Your CV Safely
When applying online:
- Verify the company.
- Read the vacancy carefully.
- Check the application deadline.
- Prepare the requested documents.

Start with accurate contact information, write a focused summary, organize your education and experience, highlight relevant skills, and remove unnecessary information.

Most importantly, customize your CV for the job you are applying for and never include information that is inaccurate or misleading.
